Help Us, Help Them, Help Themselves…

When it comes to natural disasters, Pam and Jerry Porodo are quite familiar with the ramifications the victims will succumb to and the process in which their immediate relief will be received. IMPAKTaid was set up by the couple minutes after the waves of the tsunami crashed down on Sri Lanka on December 26th, 2004. IMPAKTaid began providing for the immediate needs of the injured, displaced and traumatized.
Early into their relief efforts, they noticed an inconsistency whereby men were being reinstated in the communities and offered opportunities for reemployment. Widowed and abandoned women, without a means to care for their children were being overlooked.
IMPAKTaid started a program called Work for Widows, - dedicated to helping widowed and abandoned women to attain self- sufficiency through employment initiatives. This project provides each woman with a constant means of subsistence and brings much-needed cash into the local economy.
Critically, the program provides a support network for bereaved women, which reduces typical poverty-induced behavior such as child abandonment, prostitution and suicide.
The Work for Widows program has been called upon by the Organization Consortium for Humanitarian Agency (OCHA) to assist in the disaster recovery in Haiti.
